CHOOSING WEBSITE & HOSTING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS.
A straightforward guide to evaluating website and hosting providers. No affiliate links, no sponsored placements, no specific brand endorsements — just the criteria that matter for uptime, security, backups, performance, support, and fit.
Uptime you can actually rely on
Look for a published uptime commitment and independent status history. For a local service business, every hour your site is down is a potential missed call or lost lead. A 99.9% target is reasonable; anything less can cost real money during a busy season.
Security by default
Free SSL/TLS certificates should be standard, not an upsell. Check whether the host offers automatic security updates, malware scanning, and brute-force protection. If you collect contact forms or appointment requests, security directly affects customer trust.
Backups that run without you thinking about them
Daily automated backups with one-click restore are the minimum. Test the restore process once before you need it. A host that makes you pay extra for backups is often a false economy.
Performance where it counts
Speed affects both visitor patience and search visibility. Prefer hosts with solid-state storage, a content delivery network for static files, and server-level caching. For most local businesses, a fast simple site beats a slow fancy one.
Support that understands business impact
24/7 support is ideal, but response quality matters more than response time alone. Look for support teams that can explain what broke and how to prevent it, not just close a ticket. Read recent public reviews with this in mind.
Fit over features
A platform built for enterprise e-commerce is usually the wrong fit for a local HVAC or dental practice. Match the tool to your actual workflow: contact forms, appointment booking, mobile display, and easy edits. Avoid paying for features you will never use.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Can I edit my own site without calling a developer for every small change?
- What happens if my site is hacked or infected with malware?
- How often are backups taken, and how quickly can the site be restored?
- Is SSL included, and will my site work correctly on phones?
- What is the real monthly and annual cost after any introductory pricing ends?
- Can I move my site to another host if this one no longer fits?
